Prof. Ugo Mattei was invited by the Private Law Research Centre under the President of the Russian Federation named after S.S. Alexeev (PLRC) to participate in the XIII St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, held from May 14โ16, 2025.
The Forum, one of the largest legal conferences globally, brought together judges, legal scholars, practitioners, and policymakers from over 100 countries. This year's theme focused on "Law in a Multipolar World: New Challenges and Opportunities."
Prof. Mattei delivered a keynote address on "The Commons and Legal Pluralism in International Economic Law," drawing on his extensive research in comparative law and the commons. His presentation examined:
- The tension between market fundamentalism and collective resource management
- Alternative legal frameworks for ecological transition
- The role of non-state actors in shaping international economic governance
- Critical perspectives on investor-state dispute settlement
The IUC's participation in such high-level international forums reflects our institution's commitment to engaged scholarship and critical dialogue across geopolitical boundaries. Prof. Mattei's involvement also strengthens the IUC's partnership with Russian legal academia and opens new avenues for collaborative research.
